It’s so easy to half-ass family life. To be watching television, sending a text, or any number of other activities, while pretending to listen, but never (really) paying attention or being fully present.

Going through the motions is easy. Really caring, truly paying attention and being completely present is hard. Anything worth doing is worth doing well. That’s what makes it hard. If it wasn’t hard, it’s probably not that important.

The same goes with clients or business associates. When talking to someone it’s easy to get distracted, to look around at who is entering the room, or what is happening over the person’s shoulder. But that’s not being fully present. It’s disrespectful. It annoys them and makes them feel you’re not fully engaged in the conversation, that you have something better to do or somewhere else you’d rather be.

Engage. Be fully present. Focus. It may not seem like much, but to the other person, it will make all the difference in the world.
