I have a friend who once said to me that “social media is an obfuscated lens in which we see the world.” I think this is very accurate as most often all that is shared are the highlights of our lives.

For the past several weeks I’ve been doing some deep internal reflection in order to come to terms with my darkest shadows and take ownership of them.

Our shadows are those parts of ourselves that we try to hide from others (and ourselves), however, they always tend to come up (usually when we least want them to) and negatively affect us. These can often be triggers from others that bring up core emotional wounds.

I’ve found that if I can own these shadows and triggers and call them out, they lose their charge and capacity to continue running my life from the background.

As Carl Jung famously said:

“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”

So to take ownership of these negative aspects within myself, I want to call them out publicly, and apologize to anyone who has witnessed or been affected by these shadow themes of mine. They are:

  • Judgemental
  • Controlling
  • Unreliable
  • Scarcity
  • Needy

If I’ve ever acted in these ways (or others) towards you, I’m sorry.

If you find this exercise compelling (or possibly triggering), I would encourage you to look inward to see what shadow aspects are unconsciously running your own life, addressing and owning them so they no longer affect you.
